Tales of a Third Grade Classroom: Activity Page Help Results!

Why, hello again!

I promised to share with you the results of the newest Activity Pages, and I've got it all here for the world to see! In fact, I believe there may even be some Activity Page results from page samples I haven't shared with you before. That's because we don't want to ruin the book and show you ALL our secrets, before the book is even done. That wouldn't be fun, would it? ;)

So! The kids all drew some Crabby Cumulonimbus clouds, and had a few tips here and there to share as well...

Smart idea! I'm doing a How To Draw Little Raindrop tutorial for my class visits from now on!

...then they learned how to draw a Busy Bee... (theirs are absolutely adorable)

I love the expression on his face!

...and they drew some fancy snowflakes...

Hyuck hyuck! I love the way this kid thinks!

Having fun AND learning?! Yahooiee!

...and had some tips for me regarding some of the other pages, too...

...and they even found a typo in one of the Word Searches! Thanks, kids! :D

Here is everyone with their Little Raindrop's Big Helpers buttons!

Overall, testing out these Activity Pages turned out to be seriously helpful! I have been able to change some of the pages, with a few more changes still being needed, and they are even better than before. THANK YOU, Little Raindrop's Big Helpers, for your help! I'll be sure to test all of the Activity Pages from now on.

Keep up the great work, kids!
~Miss Melanie

Oh, PS...
I loved all the artwork so much, that I decorated my studio walls with your pictures! Thank you for decorating my room! :)

Don't get any ideas... that TV isn't mine, nor is it plugged in!
I get some serious work done in this room! :)

"Little Raindrop's BIG Plunge" Book Status Update, Spring 2014 #LittleRaindropsBigPlunge

Hello, hello!

It sure has been a while, hasn't it? But don't fret, we're all still here, chugging along and working hard as always! Life sometimes just gets in the way of the blogging, and before I know it, it's been quite a few months.

In the last super-detailed book status I wrote, I kept a detailed list of everything that has happened up until this point. I'm not going to repeat the entire story here, but if you want to read up on what happened between The Very Beginning in 2011, up until the Fall of 2013, you can read it here. For now, I will start at the end of that list with what we've been up to since then!

August, 2013:
-I do a video chat with Mr. H's class of 2013! (learn more here)
-Mr H. comes to visit, and we bring Little Raindrop to Mystic Aquarium!
-I near completion on the manuscript's revision and cleanup.
September to October, 2013:
-I complete the entire manuscript revision/cleanup!
October, 2013:
-I prepare packages to send out to our Little Raindrop's BIG Helpers!
-The manuscript and review questionnaires are sent out to teacher and science friends for review.
November 2013 to January 2014:
-Our review results slowly trickle in from our Helpers, and by the end of January they have all responded.
-I catch up on some of the blog posts.
-I re-work, edit, and create many of the Activity Pages.
-I get feedback from Mr. H's class on the Activity Pages, and we learn there is some work needed on some pages!
February, 2014:
-I read over all the notes, long answers, and edited materials that have been so graciously given to us by our friends. This valuable feedback provides me with the tools I need to fix some problems we have with the story, and I re-write a few sections of the story. It's even BETTER than before!!!
-Mr. H does further work on our Nature Notes sections, which have been lacking up to this point.
*HUGE NEWS*-I am contacted by an ACTUAL publishing company, Tibury House Publishers, who ask me to do some sketches on a story they need art for. But, more importantly, I am asked to send things I am working on, and I send them a digital copy of Little Raindrop's book dummy and manuscript. We are waiting to hear their response, and in the meantime, I am putting together a physical book dummy to send them, as my own copy is beaten up and dirty now!
March, 2014:
-I re-work, edit, and create more of the Activity Pages.
-I prepare materials for the upcoming school visit...
April, 2014:
-I do a presentation about the creation of the book with Mr. H's two Third Grade classes, as well as my Aunt's two Fourth Grade classes. The kids are really excited for this book to be complete!
-I (will soon) have another presentation about the creation of the book, but with a local Girl Scout troop
-I create and order some bookplate stickers for signing, as the kids tend to ask for autographs (eek!)

And here is what our Mega To-Do List! is looking like now... (some items may be a tad out of order)
-Integrate the newly edited Nature Notes with the current manuscript
-Complete the rest of the Activity Pages
-Send the entire manuscript to our professional editor
-While waiting for professional revision to be completed, complete the Marketing Plan
-Work on the end pages of the book, which include an Index and Glossary, as well as a Flora and Fauna Glossary, and a Quote Index
-Plot the visual layout of the pages of entire book in a storyboard form.
-Meet with the editor for feedback
-Final revision of manuscript
-Sketch out each page's layout and design in full size. Plan text and art placement.
-Create a FULL, COMPLETE dummy book
-Send complete dummy book to art and layout friends for revision
-Gather names for the Pre-Order and Email list
-Determine price of printed books and estimated time of printing
-Use feedback from Helpers to further revise and edit; maybe send to editor one last time
-After all the revisions and edits and corrections are made, including the art and layout issues, begin working on the complete and final art. (YAY! My favorite part!)
-Final art must be completed. (That's drawing all the comics, all the double page spreads and special items throughout.)
-Final art scanned and merged with layout and text components via computer.
-(Don't forget to order/pay for the desired final text font copyrights!)
-IF STILL SELF PUBLISHING: Launch Kickstarter campaign
-Complete and print final sample book on regular printer. Check for mistakes, and send the final version to mistake-checkers and other Little Raindrop's BIG Helpers!
-IF STILL SELF PUBLISHING: Get ISBN number, register the story and copyrights and all that legal stuff!
-IF STILL SELF PUBLISHING: Double check everything with the Printer. (From colors, to text, to layout and design. This might take a trip to VA.)
-IF STILL SELF PUBLISHING: Print the books!
-Plan and prepare for two book launch parties; one in RI, and one in VA
-Send the books for Pre-Order customers
-Send special Thank You gifts for all our wonderful helpers!
-OUR BOOK LAUNCH PARTIES! WOOOOOO!
-Sell those books, baby!

THE AFTERMATH... when the first book is complete and published
-Do some school visits
-Create Little Raindrop's Official web site at some point... a fancier version than just the blog
-Plot and outline the next two books in the series
-Get some ideas for some of the Little Raindrop spinoff picture books

While there is still so much to be done, I can't help but think of some really awesome quotes that I have up here on my studio wall...

"Mountains cannot be surmounted except by winding paths." -Johann Wolfgang Von Goethe
"Determination gives you the resolve to keep going in spite of the roadblocks that lay before you." -Denis Waitley

...and I feel positive and upbeat about how far we've come so far. I'm excited every time I fill up a Project Time Sheet and it's time to start a fresh one, which means we are constantly moving forward, and constantly improving!

Thank you, as always, for being there with us every step of the way!!!

Around the World with Little Raindrop: From New York to Georgia!

Hiya, Readers!

So, did I tell you what I did last month in November?

NO?!?!! Golly, I'd better hurry up!

Well, we all know November is a pretty cool month for many of us. Cool because it's c-c-cold, and cool because we get to celebrate all the things we're thankful for during Thanksgiving! But I got to do some reaallly cool things on top of all that!

At the beginning of the month, Miss Lucy took me with her on a super duper fast Amtrak train to New York City! I sure love trains! I had been to the city before, but I hadn't seen some of these other sights before now...

Let's hang out here and watch the world zooooom by!

The New York City Marathon finish line!!! Wowie!
I wonder how many water bottles they used up?

Without water, there would be no baked goods! Mmmmm, cake!

This cute fat little pigeon looks like he needs a drop of water!
(Just DON'T let him drive a bus!)

WHOA. Times Square!

This is the Washington Square Arch! It was completed and dedicated
wayyy back in 1895! The fountain we are leaning on was built in 1872.
That's, like, older than Grampa Drop and Gramma Drop!

Then, during the week of Thanksgiving, Aaron's family took me with them on a road trip! The best part was when we went climbing on rock walls like monkeys at Stone Summit in Atlanta, GA. It was SO FUN! I hope I get to go climbing again because it was super cool!

Gahhhhh! I'm up so high!!!

Don't we just look LOVEly, hee hee!

Yay, we are on our way home again!

It was great seeing all the sights in the city, and just hanging out and having a good ol' time with family and friends. I can't wait to see where I'm going next! :D

In the mean time, I better go make sure Miss Melanie is staying on track with the illustrations. She just finished some really fun activity pages, and I want to see what she is working on now!

See ya around and around!

Tales of a Third Grade Classroom: Activity Page Tryouts!

Hi, Kids!

Do you remember how I said in October that I am working on new Activity Pages for Mr. H's class to try out? Well, I've already made a whole bunch of them! Here are some final images for you to see for yourself:

 Aren't they fun?!

You might even notice this new logo on the page...

That's because with every new Activity Page I share with students, or post on the blog here, that logo will let people know that I am still testing out these activities! Sometimes I make mistakes, or create a puzzle that could be too hard, or even too easy, for kids. It's good to learn how well I am doing or not!

In fact, I sent them to Mr. H's students this week, and the kids have been trying out the activities! These kids sure look like they're having fun!

The cutest Crabby Cumulonimbus, ever!

GREAT JOB, kids!

Guess what? YOU can even try out these Activity Pages for yourself! Just have a parent click on each image and Print each page, and viola! You have your very own Tester Page! Send us photos of your finished pages and let us know how you like them to littleraindropsemail@gmail.com. Or if you want to send it through the Snail Mail instead, ask for further instructions on how to do so via email. If you include your mailing address, I will even send you a button as a Thank You!

Thanks SO much for your help! Because of you, Little Raindrop's book is going to be totally AWESOME!

Around the World with Little Raindrop: Lake Lure, North Carolina!

Hiya, Kiddos!

BRRRRRR! Boy, is it chilly CHILLY! *shiver*

It's a good thing it snowed so I could land on someone's jacket and get inside to thaw out, or else I would be stuck in a sheet of ice somewhere all Winter long! How on Earth am I supposed to type if I'm frozen?! Anyway, I hope you're all toasty warm somewhere right now, and maybe even doing some good deeds while your elf keeps a close watch on you! Christmas is just around the corner, you know!

Speaking of good deeds- I haven't yet told you about the good deed Miss Karenna did back in October: she took me along to Lake Lure with her family! Isn't that so sweet of her?! Here are some fun photos from our trip...

Karenna and I are getting goofy on this long car ride!

MMMM, spaghetti!

What... I have something on my face? Where?

A nice day to go out on the lake!

Look at the pristine water! I can even see my reflection!

AHHHH! It's sooo relaxing here!

Everybody look at the camera and say "SANDWICH!"

Such a lovely view with such a lovely friend!

Can we send this picture to my Mama?

It was great being outdoors and so close to nature again! Sometimes it is easy to get caught up in all the fun indoor stuff, that we forget all about the even MORE fun outdoor stuff! This trip made me realize how important it is to stay connected with nature and the people we care about most. That reminds me... I need to go write a letter to Mama Drop ASAP!

So whether there is sand or snow outside your window, make sure to take a step outdoors for some fresh air! You never know what Mother Nature will teach you next!

Keep on flowing!

p.s. I found some pretty amazing photos of the lake here, too! :D
